Area Code 203 History and Coverage

Area code 203 entered service in 1947 as Connecticut’s original code under the first nationwide North American Numbering Plan. For decades, one code covered the entire state, from the New York line to Rhode Island and from the coast to the Massachusetts border. That arrangement changed in 1995, when Connecticut was divided geographically and area code 860 was created for the northern and eastern portions of the state. The 203 code remained with the western and south-central part of Connecticut.

Later numbering demand led to the addition of area code 475 as an overlay for the same territory served by 203. Unlike the earlier 860 split, the 475 change did not remove communities from 203’s region; the two codes now share the same service area. The remaining 203/475 area covers nearly all of Fairfield County except Sherman as well as New Haven County. The area also extends to certain portions of Litchfield County, such as Bethlehem and Woodbury, and Roxbury. This configuration reflects Connecticut’s long-standing division between its lower western corridor and the state’s northern and eastern numbering region.
