Area Code 207 History and Coverage

Area code 207 was introduced in 1947 in one of the initial groups of area codes of the North American Numbering Plan. It covers one number plan area, namely the state of Maine, and nothing has changed since then. The area code has not had any geographic split nor any additional overlay.

The original plan divided the US into geographic areas and assigned area codes accordingly. The geography of the state of Maine allowed defining the distinct area covered by area code 207: its west border is formed by New Hampshire; to the north and east – Canada; to the south and southeast – the Atlantic Ocean. The region thus includes the coast known as Down East, river valleys of the Kennebec and Penobscot rivers, western mountains, and the northern forests of Aroostook County.

Area code 207’s historic geography is also defined by the history of population distribution in Maine: it has traditionally had port communities on the coast, industrial centers inland, agricultural communities and isolated northern towns. State regulatory authorities have implemented number conservation practices for the prolongation of the life of area code 207 without introducing an additional area code.
