Area Code 217 History and Coverage

The 217 area code is among the 86 original area codes that Bell Labs developed in 1947 for North America. It has been consistently used in the large territory covering the governmental-controlled zones in Sangamon county, scholarly cities of Champaign and Urbana, agrarian zone, and river zones located on the western side of Illinois. The territory covers the area toward the Mississippi River in the Adams and Calhoun counties, toward the boundary between the states of Illinois and Indiana in the Vermilion and Clark counties, and also the southern territory comprising Effingham, Bond, and Montgomery counties.

For many years, there were no alterations to the territory covered by the code because of the lack of the numbering resources. The Illinois Commerce Commission designated 447 as an overlay for the same territory in 2006; however, the efforts for conservation delayed the process until 2021. This helped keep the territory intact without dividing the region geographically. The territory of the 217 and 447 area codes encompasses the counties located along the I-72 in the west-central Illinois towards the Champaign area up to Ford and Iroquois counties.
