Area Code 224 History and Coverage
Area code 224 was added as an overlay to the 847 geographic area in 2002 as a way of increasing numbering capacity in the area without creating a new geographic territory. The history of the area code begins with Illinois’ early telephone number system where 312 was assigned in 1947 to cover the whole of Illinois. In 1989, as a result of demand and growth in Chicago metropolitan area, 708 was separated out from 312 for use in the suburban areas of the area. 847 came from 708 in 1996 to cover the Lake County and north suburban area before 224 became part of it.
This development shows several years of expansion outside Chicago’s city borders. Expansion in residential population, business and transportation suburbs caused the need for more telephone numbers to be made available in the O’Hare area, the North Shore area, and Fox River Valley. 224 and 847 coverage stretches from communities close to the Wisconsin border to suburban Cook County, and further west into Kane and McHenry counties. The area is in the Central Time Zone. On the Lake Michigan border of the geographic area, the North Shore area between Evanston and Lake County border is included.
