Area Code 253 History and Coverage

The introduction of area code 253 took place in 1997 through dividing Washington’s 206 area code by means of a geographic split in three parts. The 425 area code got all the areas lying to the north and east of Seattle, while area code 253 got the south metropolitan area of 206 area. Earlier, this region had experienced another split in 1995, according to which area code 360 served most of the areas in Washington excluding Seattle due to the need of more numbers in the Puget Sound area.

Therefore, area code 253 consists of Pierce County and the south parts of King County and the corridor connecting the ports and industrial areas around the Commencement Bay with suburban areas reaching to the Green River valley. In other words, the area code 253 consists of developed lowland routes between Puget Sound and Cascade foothills instead of mountains and agriculture to the east.

Being a part of the North American Numbering Plan, area code 253 is one of the codes that appeared through the subsequent splitting of 206. Earlier, the 206 area code had been serving the entire state of Washington until 1957 when area code 509 appeared in eastern Washington. After this time, the focus of the split was on 206 area, including Seattle and its neighborhood. Thus, the area code 253 is related to Puget Sound and the nearby corridor.
