Area Code 302 History and Coverage

Area code 302 was allocated to Delaware in 1947 as part of the original deployment of the North American Numbering Plan. Delaware joined the plan using one number for the whole state, a logical choice given its small size and the small population it had at the time. In those days, Delaware's telephonic landscape included an urban and industrial/commercial belt in the north, the state's capital in the center, and rural/agricultural areas in the peninsula that comprises the south. These settlement patterns grew up around the transportation corridors provided by railways, rivers, and roads linking Delaware to nearby portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland.

While many other areas in the nation have since been divided into separate territories, Delaware has never been split into different area codes nor has any overlay been introduced. Instead, the original code has persisted through the years despite the increase in residential, business, and mobile numbers used in the state. Delaware's continuity as area code 302 has much to do with its position in the Mid-Atlantic region, bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland to the west and south, and the Delaware River and Bay to the east. Its south lies within the Delmarva Peninsula, while the river and bay have for many years pointed transportation and development towards the northeast.
