Area Code 307 History and Coverage

It was assigned in 1947 in the first wave of the implementation of the North American Numbering Plan and allocated for Wyoming. State belonged to the original assignment of area codes according to the plan where phone numbers were arranged in terms of large geographic zones rather than multiple area codes which were more typical for many cities much later.

The settlement pattern of Wyoming made it possible to use one statewide code for years. Population and businesses were distributed throughout different places like railway era towns, energy-producing zones, agricultural region and tourist destinations located at large distances from each other. Union Pacific railroad passing through southern Wyoming and later Interstate highway 80 provided connections along east-west transportation route. Energy-producing zones such as Powder River basin and Wind River basin also developed. This created a need for communications related to freight, government, mining, ranching, tourism and seasonal travel without clustering of demand in one large city.

In contrast with other numbering territories which underwent further divisions due to growth of demand, Wyoming managed to keep the same 307 area code and did not have either geographic split or area code overlay.
