Area Code 308 History and Coverage

Area code 308 was introduced in 1954 because of geographical separation of the original 402 numbering plan area of Nebraska. At that moment, the state's east side stayed with 402, and the other part of the state received a separate numbering plan. This situation was quite common at that time; usually, telephone users were concentrated in cities along the Missouri River, and there were huge distances between western cities.

The territory of the numbering plan of 308 is composed of regions influenced by the railroad routes, agriculture, ranches and irrigation projects. In the central part of the state, cities and commercial centers were located along the Platte River route. Northwest of the state consists of the ranchlands of the Sandhills and scattered small towns. Meanwhile, the area of the Panhandle region developed along the transportation routes and irrigated valleys near the border with Wyoming and Colorado.

It should be noted that unlike many numbering plans with overlay, 308 has kept being one area code of its established region. Nowadays, Nebraska 402 area code shares its east side with 531 area, but it does not include 308 region. The western border goes along Wyoming border and the Panhandle territory is narrowing to Colorado border.
