Area Code 316 History and Coverage
Area code 316 was implemented in 1947 as part of the original North American Numbering Plan Area code scheme, covering the southern section of Kansas. The area code assignment to the state was made together with 913 to cover the northern part of Kansas. The area covered by the two area codes included various parts of Kansas stretching from the High Plains near the border with Colorado to the border of Kansas with Missouri through the Arkansas River Basin area.
There was concentration of population and economic activities in the south central part of the area within the second half of the twentieth century. With growing number of phone users, Kansas made a decision to split the original 316 region in 2001. This geographical split resulted into the creation of area code 620, serving all the previous 316 territory with the exception of south central cities. This was a split but not an overlay.
As a result of the changes that were made in the past, Area code 316 has been reduced significantly in terms of the geographical coverage compared to the initial area of the area code.
