Area Code 329 History and Coverage

Area code 329 became active in 2023 as an overlay of 845 numbering plan area of southeastern New York. The overlay provided additional pool of telephone numbers without the need to modify the existing regional boundary. The code 845, in its turn, had been assigned in 2000 following a geographic split of 914. Area 914 covered a much bigger territory of the lower Hudson Valley before the split, and 845 became assigned to counties located north and west of Westchester.

The region of area codes 329 and 845 is defined by geography, including the Hudson River and the path from New York City suburbs to Catskills. The area covers Rockland and Orange counties, which are situated near the metropolitan area, and further includes Dutchess and Ulster counties, and even reaches Sullivan County, where geography moves towards western Catskills. River towns, suburban counties, and resort country had been developed in different periods, but they all remain within the same numbering plan area.

Area on the Hudson River is defined by the Poughkeepsie corridor, while area to the west includes the Catskill part of Sullivan County.
