Area Code 401 History and Coverage

Area code 401 was introduced to cover Rhode Island in 1947 as original North American Numbering Plan area code. At first, the area codes were designed for organizing telephony numbering systems in the United States and Canada where each area code covered certain territories. Thus, area code 401 at once was designated for covering Rhode Island and it has not changed ever since – neither geographical division nor overlay appeared in the course of time. And this fact is rather surprising taking into consideration that area code 401 covers relatively small state with well-developed industry.

Not all parts of Rhode Island experienced the same historical development. Mill towns in the Blackstone Valley, economic activities on the southern coastline and already formed areas close to the borders of Massachusetts and Connecticut shaped different local development patterns but the boundaries of numbering remained the same without regard for counties, municipalities or economic zones.

The area of 401 territory in the Eastern Time Zone includes the northern urbanized strip, western interior, Aquidneck Island and shoreline communities opposite to the Block Island Sound.
