Area Code 413 History and Coverage

Area code 413 was introduced in 1947 to the North American Numbering Plan among the original 86 codes. There were two numbering plan areas at first in Massachusetts: 413 served the western end of the Commonwealth, while 617 covered most of the remaining state. While the eastern part of Massachusetts gained further number areas after split and overlay of some numbers, area code 413 remained a single geographical number area without either split or overlay.

Its boundaries show that telephone regions do not always follow county lines. The territory reaches the Massachusetts–New York border and extends east into Worcester County through Hardwick and Warren. Several Franklin County communities—Orange, New Salem, Warwick, and Wendell—are exceptions to the otherwise western Massachusetts pattern, falling within the 978/351 numbering region instead.

The 413 territory developed around a mix of river-valley industrial centers, college communities, agricultural towns, and upland areas. Compared with the more densely populated eastern side of the state, the region did not require the series of numbering changes seen around Boston, the South Shore, and northeastern Massachusetts. Its long-standing footprint still includes the western state line and the eastern Worcester County edge near Hardwick and Warren.
