Area Code 417 History and Coverage

Area Code 417 became operational in January 1950, as a result of changes in the state’s original numbering plan where the majority of southwest was split from 816. Missouri joined the North American Numbering Plan system in 1947 with 314 and 816 area codes, becoming the third such code in Missouri. This code created a geographic numbering plan area for a significant territory whose cities were interconnected by regional business hubs, county seats, railroad routes and highway systems.

The boundaries of its geographic territory are defined by the Ozark Plateau, covering western part towards Kansas border and southern portion to the Arkansas border. The territory also includes Four State Area and lake country around Table Rock Lake. As opposed to the urban corridor covered by other codes, the 417 territory consists of scattered locations located on ridges, valleys and transportation arteries in the southwest and south central portion of Missouri.

From the telecommunication point of view, in 1950 this area of Missouri was included into growing nationwide North American Numbering Plan where geographic service territories were distinguished by three digit codes. Area code 417 is still among the existing geographic codes of Missouri and uses Central Time Zone. The southern part of the Ozarks covered by this code include Branson and Table Rock Lake area.
