Area Code 425 History and Coverage
Area code 425 was introduced in 1997 with a geographic split of Washington state's area code 206. Prior to this change, area code 360 had been created in 1995 and had taken over much of western Washington state outside the metropolitan Puget Sound area. The creation of 425 and 253 in 1997 completed the split of the remaining portion of the 206 area, with 425 covering the northern and eastern portion and 253 covering the southern portion, while area code 206 retained its use in Seattle and its immediate vicinity.
This latest boundary revision represents further development within the metropolitan area in the latter part of the twentieth century, as suburban centers of employment and housing required more telephone numbers. The geographic boundaries of the area code 425 correspond to the territory east of Lake Washington and extending up toward Snohomish County, which is located in the middle between Seattle itself and areas closer to the Cascade foothills. The area also corresponds to the regional pattern of lakes and transportation, since Lake Washington separates the Eastside from Seattle, while Interstate 405 connects some of the major suburban centers within the area code. Area code 425 is a split-created area code and not an overlay code.
