Area Code 428 History and Coverage
428 area code came into use in April 2023 as a distributed overlay over New Brunswick’s current area code 506. This was after the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission decided on using area code 428 to provide additional capacity to meet the increasing number-use forecasts. Instead of splitting the geographic area code, the overlay left the previous 506 geographic code area unchanged while adding area code 428.
New Brunswick had been using only 506 as its geographic code for many years. 506 code was introduced in 1955 when New Brunswick separated from the wider 902 numbering plan area that included the Maritime provinces. Introduction of 428 area code follows a traditional Canadian approach in numbering plan - retain the known regional boundary but have an additional code available in it.
Both area codes 428 and 506 are used throughout the diverse landscape of the province of New Brunswick – from the coast of Bay of Fundy and Saint John River valley to the areas near Quebec boundary.
