Area Code 434 History and Coverage

Area code 434 was introduced in 2001 through a geographic split of Virginia's 804 area code. Before that change, this territory formed part of the 804 service area. The division left 804 with the Richmond region while assigning 434 to the western and southern portion of the former territory. Under the North American Numbering Plan, a geographic split creates separate service areas from an established code; it differs from an overlay, which adds another code across the same geography.

This service area covers the large region of the Virginia Piedmont and Southside. The territory goes from the vicinity of Charlottesville to communities along Route 29 corridor and up to the border of North Carolina. Service area includes the region located near the Blue Ridge foothills, the James River basin and tobacco country counties near South Boston as well as the Farmville area and its surroundings. These regions represent the markets different from Richmond metropolitan area.

In 2022, the 686 overlay was introduced within the territory of 434 area code. This action provided additional numbering capacity without changing the geographic boundaries of the existing code. Both codes operate in the communities near Lake Gaston and the southern border of Virginia.
