Area Code 448 History and Coverage
Area 448 became an overlay to the already existing 850 numbering plan area in 2021. Prior to that, the underlying 850 code was implemented as a result of geographic split from 904 in 1997. This split had separated the Panhandle from the remaining northeast Florida region under 904 code. The later change in 2021 did not imply any geographic splitting but rather created another number code within the boundaries of the 850 numbering area.
Thus, there were two different strategies applied for numbering in the region during two periods: geographic split in 1997 and overlaying in 2021. The landscape covered by the new numbering plan is the narrow strip of land in the northwestern part of Florida between Alabama and the Gulf of Mexico. Interstate 10 crosses the area inland while the coastline moves toward the southern part around the Apalachicola Bay. The majority of the area consists of forested, farmland, military bases, colleges, government offices, and commercial activities. Such landscape unites coastal and inland towns in one numbering area.
