Area Code 458 History and Coverage

Area code 458 came into use in 2010 as an overlay in the existing 541 numbering plan area. The latter began use in 1995, as the result of splitting Oregon’s long-used 503 number plan geographically and assigning the 541 code to most other regions of the state. The new overlay did not change the boundary of the 541 numbering plan area but provided additional telephone numbers for use there.

Regional development is a factor that explains why one numbering plan area may be associated with regions that differ significantly in their settlement pattern. This area includes agricultural valleys, coastal ports, towns of the timber industry, mountain passes, and high desert in eastern Oregon. The population centers are well-separated by terrain, but the telephone numbering history of the region has stayed the same since 1995. Instead of drawing up a new geographic boundary, the 458 overlay was placed on top of the regional configuration that existed already.

The example at hand shows how an overlay can occur after a split within the North American Numbering Plan framework. In this case, 503 and 541 were split geographically while 458 later covered the whole of 541. The region includes connections between the Oregon coastline and the interior parts of the state as well as southern connections to California. The southern-central part of the region covers the Klamath Basin, which contains Klamath Falls located near the southern border of Oregon.
