Area Code 463 History and Coverage
463 area code was introduced in 2016 as an overlay to the already assigned numbering plan of 317 in central Indiana due to the exhaustion of the number pool because of population increase, workplaces' and wireless devices' demand for the number pool, and need for different numbers within the area. Instead of creating another code that will divide the territory geographically, Indiana chose to introduce the 463 code together with the 317 one.
The new code was assigned as an overlay to a very old numbering plan area code for the state of Indiana, which has existed since 1947 during the original North American Numbering Plan deployment. Population growth in the twentieth-first century and expansion of suburbs as places of employment had exhausted the numbers for the older area code. The introduction of overlay enabled continued number assignment without reassigning established communities to the new area code.
It covers the central Indiana urbanized regions and their development corridors, where expansion of residential and businesses areas have expanded to adjoining counties. This service area observes Eastern Time, along the Interstate 65, Interstate 69, and Interstate 70 development corridors that meet in central Indiana.
