Area Code 464 History and Coverage
Area code 464 became available in January 2022 as a result of the process started many years earlier to create more numbers in the 708 area. Its genesis can be traced back to the splitting of the former area in 1996 into 630 and 847 to serve suburban Illinois. Meanwhile, the new 708 area continued serving most of Cook County except Chicago and some areas in Will County, with old rail, highway, and industrial/ residential corridors.
On June 30, 1999, the state regulators in Illinois introduced an all-services overlay for area code 708. This move did not introduce the 464 code initially because of number conservation approaches such as number pooling and numbering request review. After the need for the new number came up, the number code was put in the same region without creating a new district area which is the meaning of the overlay and not split.
This area consists of commercial centers along I-55 and I-80 systems, older inner ring suburbs west of Chicago and suburban communities reaching toward Indiana. This area exists in Central time Zone, just like other parts of northeastern Illinois. The southeastern part of the area consists of Southland area around Park Forest and part of Will County adjacent to Indiana state line.
