Area Code 507 History and Coverage

The area code was assigned in 1954 due to a geographic split of the 612 code in the state of Minnesota. It split off the southern part of the state from the former 612 area code as the North American Numbering Plan responded to increasing demand for telephone numbers. This was the single most important geographic event in the evolution of the plan; 507 was not one of the area codes that formed Minnesota in 1947.

Regional demand for the code has not concentrated in a single major metropolitan area. Communities hosting county seats, agricultural trading centers, hospitals and schools, and manufacturing companies has resulted in a widespread distribution of people and businesses in the region. The area includes many local markets that are distinct from the Twin Cities numbering area.

This area code region includes prairies and lakes in the southwest, Minnesota River valley, and the rugged Driftless Area to the southeast. Interstate 90 runs as an east–west highway through a significant portion of the area, while U.S. Highway 14 runs through several regional cities. The terrain varies from flat agricultural plains to bluff country and river valleys on the southeastern fringe of the state.
