Area Code 509 History and Coverage

Area code 509 was created in 1957 when the geographic division of the original 206 area led to the creation of an additional code area for Washington’s inland areas. This move was necessitated by the problems in serving one very big state using just one code after the implementation of the North American Numbering Plan which allocated phone codes in 1947. This region does not have an overlay code assigned to it unlike western Washington; 509 is still the current code for this area.

This code follows the geography of Washington more than any single urbanized region. It includes the Palouse region which is the dry land wheat-growing region, orchards and river valleys of the eastern parts of the Cascade foothills, and the open agricultural regions of the Columbia Plateau. The service area also covers north central Washington all the way up to the Canada–US border and southern communities of the Oregon border.

Most of this region was developed along rail lines, irrigation schemes, farming, forestry activities, and inland transportation facilities which resulted into scattered community developments in contrast to the development of one single metropolitan region. Areas such as the Yakima Valley, Tri-Cities region which includes confluences of Columbia, Snake, and Yakima Rivers and southeastern Washington close to Walla Walla comprise area code 509 region.
