Area Code 526 History and Coverage
Area code 526 was launched for non-geographic 5XX-NXX assignments on January 28, 2021, after the designation of that area code for that particular purpose in December 2020. The history of this code dates back to May 2012 when the Industry Numbering Committee reserved 526, together with other 5XX codes, in order to increase the resource known as 5YY at that time.
That year, the committee broadened the resource’s service description to accommodate emerging machine-to-machine technologies and other non-geographic applications. The category later adopted the name 5XX-NXX, reflecting a numbering structure in which service providers receive number blocks identified by a 5XX area code and an NXX prefix.
NANPA began assigning 526 prefixes after the available prefixes in the earlier 5XX area codes reached exhaustion. This placed 526 after 525 in the sequence of newly activated non-geographic resources. The code has no local rate-center coverage, city assignment, geographic split, or overlay history because it was introduced as a national non-geographic resource.
The 5XX category remains part of the North American Numbering Plan’s specialized numbering inventory. NANPA’s April 2026 exhaust analysis listed 526 among the 5XX area codes in service.
