Area Code 534 History and Coverage
Area code 534 was assigned in 2010 as an overlay of the existing Wisconsin 715 numbering plan area. The addition of the new area code was approved by the Public Service Commission in 2008 due to the need for additional capacity with the longstanding 715 area code. Instead of dividing the area geographically with a geographic split, 715 and 534 were used together in the same geographical area.
The process went through the following two years, from regulatory approval to implementation. The preparation period began in 2009, and the implementation period continued until 2010, when the overlay plan became effective, and 534 became functional on August 14, 2010. The other area code 715 has a very long history compared to the other area code. 715 received Wisconsin in 1947 as the original North American Numbering Plan area code, where it covered the northern part of the state.
The 715/534 coverage consists of a vast geographical area in Wisconsin, reaching from Lake Superior coast, the St. Croix River side of the state bordering Minnesota to the forests in the area close to the Michigan border.
