Area Code 575 History and Coverage

The 575 area code became operational on October 7, 2007 as a result of geographic split of the New Mexico area code. New Mexico used 505 area code all throughout the state since 1947. 505 area code is one of the original NANP area codes. Split left the 505 area code to be used in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Farmington, Gallup and the surrounding areas, while 575 was assigned to cover the larger part of the state. This split, but not the overlay, created geographic numbering areas.

The change reflected the practical challenge of assigning telephone numbers across a state whose population and commercial activity are concentrated in several distant regional centers. Southern New Mexico includes border communities and agricultural districts along the Rio Grande, while the eastern side reaches across the High Plains toward the Texas line. The 575 territory also extends through southeastern energy-producing areas, the mountain communities around the Sacramento range, and northern places beyond the Santa Fe area.

Its boundaries bring together regions with different development patterns: university and government-related activity in the south, military installations near Alamogordo and Clovis, oil-and-gas communities around Carlsbad and Hobbs, and tourism-oriented communities near Taos and the Gila country. The code’s coverage therefore follows the 2007 numbering boundary rather than a single metropolitan corridor, stretching from the southern border north toward the Colorado line.
