Area Code 582 History and Coverage

Area code 582 was introduced in 2021 as an overlay area for Pennsylvania’s traditional 814 numbering plan area. This new area code helped increase the number availability for the area without subdividing the area into geographic divisions. Area code 814, on the other hand, has been in existence since the introduction of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947. Hence, this region became one of the earliest regions in Pennsylvania within the national numbering plan.

The shared territory consists of a broad inland section of the state and not a metropolitan area. In the north, the territory goes as far as the communities located near Allegheny National Forest and Lake Erie area; farther south, it expands through Allegheny Plateau to the Laurel Highlands. There are various natural features including forested highlands, valley areas and transportation routes leading from the county seats and regional service centers.

The development in the region revolves mainly around industry, resource-based operations, railroad links, educational facilities, and public services despite the differences in development from county to county. Introducing 582 maintained the traditional geographic area associated with 814 with only an added area code. The southern part of the combined area encompasses towns in the Somerset and Bedford counties.
