Area Code 605 History and Coverage
605 code was assigned in 1947 and was one of the original codes created in North American Numbering Plan. In contrast with other states, South Dakota got one numbering-plan area instead of several ones and zero in the middle was consistent with the original numbering convention for states having one area code. This arrangement survived until nowadays despite the drastic changes in using phone numbers by the residents, businesses, governmental organizations and institutions.
The area code has developed along with the growth of the state characterized by a great distance between population centers, agriculture counties, reservations, state capital Pierre and regional trade centers. It encompasses Missouri River valley, northeastern glacial lakes, Black Hills and plains of the state reaching its border with Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Wyoming, and Iowa. Thus, these different territories have been designated the same numbering area without the necessity of a geographic split.
No overlay area code has been added to South Dakota, and 605 has not been split into smaller numbering areas. This makes it one of the relatively few original statewide codes that still remains in place. The code's history is tied to a statewide telephone geography that has continued from the 1947 plan through the present.
