Area Code 607 History and Coverage

Area code 607 was introduced in 1954 when sections of area codes 315 and 716 were combined to form a south-central area of New York. As a result, the southern portion of 315 and eastern portion of 716 were combined to create an area that was shaped by rivers, upland counties, and the east-west transit routes of the Southern Tier.

Initially, the North American Numbering Plan for New York involved five area codes, including 315 and 716 in 1947. In the mid-1950s, the 607 area code became one of the early geographical divisions in the state apart from the first arrangement involving five codes. Its development was through splitting and not an overlay whereby parts of the two older codes became a new number region.

The 607 region spreads over the southern Finger Lakes around Bath and Corning, then eastward into the upper Susquehanna watershed towards Oneonta and western Catskills. The region includes territories near the Pennsylvania border and internal communities linked by the former Route 17 corridor which is now mostly related to Interstate 86. Most of the area is still in the Eastern Time Zone and Southern Tier settlement history.
