Area Code 608 History and Coverage

Area code 608 was assigned in 1955 through a geographic split of Wisconsin’s original 715 area code. The change created a separate numbering region for the state’s southern and southwestern communities as telephone service needs grew beyond the capacity of the earlier arrangement. Its territory developed around a mix of government, university, manufacturing, agricultural, and regional trade centers, with Madison becoming an especially important source of continued demand for telephone numbers.

For many years, 608 was the only one area code in this part of Wisconsin. As the number of connections, companies, mobile phones, and any other services increased, the number of available phone numbers decreased. In 2023, 353 area code was introduced as an overlay to the same geographic region, which means that the two codes can be assigned simultaneously in the existing 608 area.

The area goes till the border of Illinois near Beloit and then west till the Mississippi River in the Driftless Area near Prairie du Chien. The northern part of this area includes Wisconsin Dells, connecting the state capital region with river towns and agricultural counties as well as the rugged terrain of the southwest of the state.
