Area Code 618 History and Coverage

Area code 618 was established in 1947 as one of the original North American Numbering Plan codes. Illinois initially had only four area codes: 312 for Chicago, 815 for northern Illinois outside Chicago, 217 for the central part of the state, and 618 for the south. That early arrangement gave the lower part of Illinois one continuous numbering region, from the Mississippi River side of the state through the interior and toward the Ohio River boundary.

Over time, the territory included areas with different settlement patterns and economic links. The Metro East counties were tied closely to the St. Louis metropolitan area, while communities farther east and south followed routes such as Interstate 57, U.S. 50, and the river corridors. Carbondale and the surrounding southern Illinois university and coalfield region remained within the same numbering plan area as the western edge near the Mississippi.

By 2000, rising demand for telephone numbers led the North American Numbering Plan Administrator to identify 618 as an area needing relief. The Illinois Commerce Commission selected an all-services overlay in 2002, rather than a geographic split. Number conservation delayed the change for years, and area code 730 was ultimately introduced as an overlay in 2023. The 618/730 region includes Illinois river-border communities near Cairo as well as the counties along the state’s southwestern edge.
