Area Code 630 History and Coverage

Area code 630 was introduced in 1996 through a geographic split of area code 708. At that point, 708 had already become the principal code for Chicago’s suburbs after its 1989 separation from 312, but continued growth beyond the city required another geographic division. The new territory developed around DuPage County, with portions of Kane, Cook, and Will counties included along its edges.

This split occurred because of suburban expansion west of Chicago in connection with highway networks, especially those connecting with the I-88 corridor and near the Fox River valley. The number of residential and business developments in this part of the metropolitan area had grown substantially in the preceding decades such that another split of the numbering plan was necessary. Area code 331 was added in 2007 to create an overlay for the 630 territory and not to replace 630.

Through the split of 312 and the split of 708, the original numbering plan territory for Chicago has been further subdivided as the metropolitan area grew and spread out. For area code 630 and area code 331, the territorial boundaries generally follow the suburban areas of the counties and development corridors rather than the city of Chicago itself. The area goes out to the Fox River side of Kane County and the suburbs of Will County.
