Area Code 656 History and Coverage

In 2022, 656 was introduced as an overlay for the established 813 numbering-plan territory in west-central Florida. The addition supplied another set of telephone numbers while leaving existing geographic boundaries in place; it was not a geographic split. Its arrival followed a long evolution of 813, which dates to 1953, when it was created from 305. At that point, 813 covered a much broader swath of Florida’s Gulf Coast and interior than it does today. Later numbering changes narrowed that earlier reach and left 813 centered on the state’s western peninsula before 656 was added.

The 656 and 813 codes share a geographical area, which has been defined due to consistent growth of population in terms of housing and businesses, along with additional demands for numbers related to phones and other services. The geographical area covers the west part of central Florida, including Tampa Bay area and some parts of Pasco and Pinellas counties. Eastern time zone is applicable to the area just as well as to the rest of Florida outside of the Panhandle.
