Area Code 669 History and Coverage
Area code 669 was launched in 2012 as an overlay to 408, increasing the number pool in the region without splitting off a geographical territory into a new area code. This happened due to further requirements of telephone numbers in Santa Clara County, which is one of the most densely populated areas of the Bay Area, characterized by extensive technology industry.
The older 408 area code was introduced in 1959 as a geographical split of area code 415. At that time, the range of 408 was much greater and extended over the large geographical territory of central coastal California. The next geographical split took place in 1998; it resulted in creation of 831 area code covering Monterey Bay and surrounding coastal and inland regions, while 408 concentrated on the South Bay.
Further needs of assigning additional telephone numbers occurred in the region within the scope of the remaining 408 area code. Growth of population and businesses, mobile phones and various services requiring NA numbering plan numbers increased the demand. Overlay of 408 allowed retaining the existing code while establishing a new 669 in the same geographical area.
