Area Code 681 History and Coverage
Area code 681 entered service on March 28, 2009, as a statewide overlay for West Virginia’s existing 304 numbering plan. Numbering forecasts showed a need for additional telephone numbers without dividing the state into separate code territories. Because it was an overlay rather than a split, 681 did not replace 304 or create a distinct geographic district within West Virginia. The two codes share the boundaries long associated with 304.
Area code 304 was assigned to West Virginia in 1947 during the original North American Numbering Plan rollout. For decades, it served as the state’s only area code despite the distance between its river cities, mountain communities, and eastern counties. The overlay approach retained that single statewide numbering geography while adding 681 for future assignments.
The overlapping 304 and 681 region covers the Ohio River, the central Appalachia plateau, and the Eastern Panhandle region adjacent to Maryland and Virginia. As such, West Virginia follows Eastern Time and thus its numbering territory is within the eastern United States time zone.
