Area Code 701 History and Coverage

In 1947, 701 was assigned as one of the original area codes created for the North American Numbering Plan. North Dakota received a single code at the system’s opening, and 701 has remained intact rather than being divided through a geographic split or supplemented by an overlay. That continuity spans major shifts in the state’s settlement patterns and regional economy.

Commercial expansion in early years took place along rail lines, crossings of rivers, and farm areas, thus making a scattered set of communities on the prairie. The Red River Valley in the east side of North Dakota has been shaped by agriculture and related businesses, whereas the Missouri River Valley has been home to communities in the middle part of the state. Government functions, education, healthcare services, and farming-related activities have also helped develop regional centers.

Development on the western side of the state followed a separate route, with the Bakken region developing as an oil center, especially northwestern and west-central regions of the state. Area code 701 also covers some communities close to the Canadian border and the less developed Badlands of southwestern region of North Dakota. It is the only area code serving the state without any split or overlay till date.
