Area Code 712 History and Coverage

In 1947, 712 was assigned as one of the original area codes established under the North American Numbering Plan. Iowa’s initial arrangement divided the state into three large numbering regions, with 712 paired with the western portion while 515 and 319 served central and eastern sections. That structure grew from a period when telephone service was planned around broad geographic territories.

Over time, demand for telephone numbers increased as residents, businesses, and public institutions added more lines and later wireless service. Iowa reacted to the needs of other states and split the 515 and 319 area codes twice in 2000 to create 641 and 563 respectively. With the split, 712 became the only remaining area code from the initial layout of the state.

The absence of a split or overlay for 712 means its boundaries still trace back to the state’s first NANP layout. Its territory includes numerous county seats and agricultural areas, where population is distributed more broadly than in Iowa’s largest urban centers. Within that long-standing region, the Loess Hills run along Iowa’s western edge near the Missouri River.
