Area Code 727 History and Coverage

Area code 727 was established in 1998 following approval by Florida of the geographic split of the existing 813 numbering plan area. The split was implemented as a result of documentation of growing need for telephone numbers in the Tampa region, previously covered by 813. The original suggestion of adding a new code to the Tampa area was subsequently changed by the geographic split of 1998. As a result of the split, 727 received Pinellas County and western Pasco County, while 813 retained coverage of Hillsborough County and eastern Pasco County.

That boundary gave 727 a west-of-the-bay footprint shaped by county lines as well as the region’s coastal development. Its territory follows the Pinellas peninsula toward the Gulf beaches and extends north through the western side of Pasco County. The split separated the more densely developed peninsula and adjacent coastal communities from the Tampa-side and inland portions that stayed under 813.

The 1998 decision was a part of the bigger period of numbering expansion in Florida, when existing area codes were being divided to get the capacity for telephone numbers. In numbering plan records, 727 is directly related to 813 split, not to the separate statewide assignment. One of the clear boundaries between 727 and 813 regions is the separation in Pasco County.
