Area Code 779 History and Coverage

The introduction of area code 779 occurred in 2007 as an overlay that is an addition to the existing numbering plan of 815 in northern Illinois. The second area code, 815, was introduced in 1947, at the time when Illinois got several area codes in the North American Numbering Plan. The introduction of the new area code did not split the older territory into two different geographic areas; instead, area code 779 was introduced in the same geographic area, while 815 remained active.

These two area codes belong to the telecommunications network which operates in a considerable part of the state outside of Chicago. This network covers the territory of the state from its northern border close to Wisconsin and to the south following the Illinois River Valley till the Interstate 80 line. It involves a variety of manufacturing towns, agricultural regions, and towns which were connected before by rail and highway lines. Thus, this is the expansion of the pool of the numbers without changing the map of the municipalities and counties in the state. Places covered by the 815 – 779 include cities in Winnebago, Ogle, LaSalle, and Kankakee counties.
