Area Code 806 History and Coverage
In 1957, 806 became Texas’s sixth active North American Numbering Plan area through a geographic split using territory reassigned from 915 and a small part of 817. The change divided some of the state’s exceptionally large early telephone-service regions, which had previously placed much of West Texas under only a few codes.
Prior to 806, there were five numbering plans within the state: 214, 512, 713, 817, and 915. The addition of 806 gave the High Plains a separate numbering identity within that early statewide arrangement. Its footprint brought together country north and south of the Canadian River with the broad tableland of the Llano Estacado. The territory meets the Oklahoma Panhandle at Texas’s northern edge and approaches New Mexico along the west.
Dalhart, Perryton, Canadian, Pampa, Hereford, Canyon, and Brownfield have long been part of the same numbering region. Texas’s numbering map changed substantially in later decades as additional codes were introduced around the state. Area code 806 has retained its 1957 geographic identity and remains a single-code region without an overlay.
