Area Code 808 History and Coverage

Area code 808 was assigned to Hawaii by the North American Numbering Plan in 1957, two years before Hawaii gained status of a state in 1959. The first number plan came into force in 1947, and then ten years later Hawaii and Alaska were added to the coverage area.

Hawaii’s island geography gave 808 an unusually broad physical service territory. The code reaches from Kauai and Oahu through Maui County and the island of Hawaii, linking communities separated by substantial stretches of ocean. Honolulu developed as the state’s main population and business center, while the same code also became part of everyday communications on the Neighbor Islands.

Area code 808 remains the only geographic area code of Hawaii. This is due to the particular system of numbering in Hawaii within the NANP, where one code is used for an island chain with the length of approximately 1,500 miles between the Kure Atoll in the northwest and the Big Island in the southeast.
