Area Code 816 History and Coverage
816 area code is one of the original numbering plan codes assigned in the United States during the creation of North American Numbering Plan in 1947. It covers west Missouri at the time of its division from 314 area code to cover eastern Missouri. The geographic separation of 816 area code in 1997 has led to the emergence of 660 area code which covers most parts of north and west central Missouri.
The Missouri Public Service Commission approved an overlay plan for 816 in October 2000, then postponed it in September 2001 while conservation measures were evaluated. Those measures included assigning numbers in smaller blocks and returning unused blocks for reassignment, helping extend the available supply.
Afterwards, 975 area code overlay was introduced in the same territory. 975 phone numbers became available starting October 13, 2023, while 816 numbers continued to be assigned to consumers. Pairs of 816/975 numbering areas include Savannah, Richmond, Maysville, Odessa, Holden, Lawson, and Drexel.
