Area Code 831 History and Coverage
Area code 831 was introduced on July 11, 1998, by geographical split of area code 408. The necessity of introducing the code resulted from the growing need for numbering in the area, which at that point encompassed larger number of regions than just the modern Santa Clara County.
Its numbering history reaches back to 1947, when this portion of central California fell within area code 415, one of California’s first three area codes. A split in 1959 created 408 and placed the Monterey Bay region and adjoining inland communities under that code for nearly four decades.
831 code serves the broad corridor of Central Coast, starting from the Big Sur coastline and Monterey Bay region through the Salinas Valley towards San Benito County in the east of the Coast Ranges. The remaining parts of area code 408 serve northern regions around Santa Clara County. Several similar numbering-plan changes were observed in California in the late 1990s.
