Area Code 838 History and Coverage
Area code 838 was created on September 19, 2017, subsequent to the approval by New York State of relief for the established 518 numbering area. The Public Service Commission approved the overlay on September 15, 2016, due to projections that the available numbering capacity would soon be exhausted in 2017. Formal planning of the new code began in October of that year.
838 code was added to the already existing one in the form of an all-services overlay code alongside 518 and that provided for allocation of additional telephone numbers in the same territory. Area code 518 is actually a legacy of the first deployment of the North American Numbering Plan in 1947 in the region.
The 518/838 territory covers all or part of 17 counties of the eastern New York and that includes the upper Hudson Valley, the Capital Region, the Adirondacks around Lake Placid, and North Country in the vicinity of the Canadian border. The territory has grown through years to reflect the historic range of the 518 area code before 838 came into being.
