Area Code 839 History and Coverage
Area code 839 became operational on May 26, 2020, after being designated by the South Carolina Public Service Commission in 2018 as an all-services overlay to the existing 803 numbering plan area. The code was introduced when it became clear that the number pool available for 803 would run out in the following years. The overlay preserved the existing regional boundary of the area but added another pool of telephone numbers.
The shared territory links the northern Piedmont area near Rock Hill, the Midlands, and the Savannah River side of the state from Aiken to Allendale. The territory consists of parts of Chester, Richland, and Sumter counties, corresponding to a central part of South Carolina defined by the I-77 route, the capital region, and older transportation routes linking inland cities.
According to the North American Numbering Plan, 839 is the latest evolution stage of the original 803 area of South Carolina. The area code 803 was introduced in 1947 for the whole state. Area code 864 was established through geographic split in 1995, and area code 843 – in 1998.
