Area Code 857 History and Coverage

Area code 857 was introduced on May 2, 2001 as an overlay to the existing 617 numbering plan area. Planning documents from the state revealed that 617 numbering plan area had exhausted its available telephone number supply, thus the need for more numbering capacity. At the time, available sources noted that the pressure came from the increasing residential population and the increased usage of additional telephone lines, wireless phones, faxes, modems, and pagers.

Its arrival followed a broader restructuring of eastern Massachusetts numbering. Geographic splits of 617 and 508 had produced 781 and 978 in 1998, yet the reduced 617 territory still required relief. The overlay placed 857 within the same established footprint, allowing the region to receive additional numbers while retaining its familiar service boundaries. Under the North American Numbering Plan, this created a paired 617/857 numbering area for the central metropolitan district.

The shared territory remains concentrated around the historic urban core and close-in communities. Its coverage reaches across the Charles River into Somerville and Chelsea, reflecting the compact, highly developed part of Greater Boston served by the older 617 network.
