Area Code 864 History and Coverage

Area code 864 became available in 1995 following a split of area code 803 as the demand for phone numbers exceeded the capacity for a single number code in South Carolina. It became a result of splitting the northwestern part of the state away from the central and coastal region that was still served by area code 803. Area code 843 became the split code from 803 in 1998 to cover the coastal region.

The 864 territory is shaped by the Piedmont and lower Blue Ridge rather than a simple rectangular boundary. It reaches toward the North Carolina border in the north and extends southwest through foothill and lake country near the Savannah River. Oconee and Pickens counties sit along its mountain-facing edge, while Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens, and Union are part of its rolling southern and eastern reaches. The region includes established manufacturing areas, major highway connections, and older county-seat communities away from the interstate.

Before the 1995 split, the 803 designation connected every part of South Carolina under one statewide numbering arrangement. Creating 864 marked the first geographic division of that arrangement and assigned a separate code to the northwestern section of the state. Along the western edge, its coverage approaches the Georgia line near Lake Hartwell and the Savannah River.
