Area Code 901 History and Coverage

Area code 901 was established in 1947 as the original Tennessee area code in the nation's first North American Numbering Plan. One single area code covered all of Tennessee, from its western communities bordering the Mississippi river all the way to its eastern Appalachian counties. A geographical split occurred in 1954, creating area code 615 that would serve two-thirds of Tennessee, while 901 would remain as the numbering plan for West Tennessee.

A second geographic split took effect in 2001, when area code 731 was introduced for much of that broader West Tennessee territory. Area code 901 became more localized in its coverage with Memphis as the center of this numbering region together with the surrounding communities in Fayette and Tipton counties. Some of the locations within this numbering region include Covington and Somerville.

Current service area includes Shelby, Fayette, Tipton, and Hardeman counties. The coverage is going from Covington in Tipton county to Somerville in Fayette county with Memphis being the main city in that numbering area.
