Area code 906 was established in 1961 via a geographic split of Michigan’s old 616 numbering area. This assignment provided the Upper Peninsula with its own number in the early period of North American Numbering Plan development when most states started splitting their larger service areas due to growing telephone numbers. Area code 906 has continued to represent the peninsula’s 15 counties that make up an area surrounded by Lake Superior in the north and Wisconsin in the west and south.
