Area Code 913 History and Coverage
Area code 913 was put into service in 1947 as one of the original area codes under the North American Numbering Plan Area. The code’s original area covered northern Kansas, stretching from the Kansas City region through Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, Salina, Hays and other communities all the way up to the state of Colorado.
Due to increasing demand for telephone numbers, Kansas authorities approved a geographical split of 913 in December 1996. This resulted in splitting off the area code 785 from the western and middle sections of the old 913 territory in July 1997. The new code covers northern Kansas west of the division boundary, covering Topeka, Lawrence, and other communities west of there, leaving 913 with the eastern part around the Kansas City region.
Since then, area code 913 has been used in the Kansas side of Kansas City metro region and nearby areas in northeast Kansas. It now covers parts of Johnson and Wyandotte counties and extends into surrounding areas lying east of the boundary established in 1997.
