Area Code 928 History and Coverage
Area code 928 was introduced on June 23, 2001, through the geographic split of area code 520 by the Arizona Corporation Commission. The creation of area code 928 was approved in 2000 to provide more numbering resources for the growing need for numbering in the regions where area code 520 had already been exhausted except in greater Phoenix calling areas.
Under the approved boundary, 928 received most of the former 520 territory. The portion that remained with 520 was centered on the greater Tucson region and included rate areas in Cochise, Pima, Pinal, and Santa Cruz counties. That division established the present separation between southern Arizona’s Tucson-centered numbering area and the larger 928 territory.
The service area of 928 covers the Colorado Plateau and the Grand Canyon area, the Colorado River area along the western border, and the high country of eastern Arizona.
